According to a study, conducted by Dutch scientists, eating nuts (half a handful) is good for early death prevention. In fact, they reduce the risk. There were several studies that found that nuts are good for cardiovascular health, but this is the first study that found this new benefit. Researchers from the Maastricht University, found that people who eat 10g of nuts or peanuts per day, have a 23% lower chance of death. The study lasted 10 years. On the other hand, peanut butter doesn’t have this benefit. It is rich in trans fats and salt.
Nuts are: antioxidants, fiber, several vitamins, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. They also have a lot of other bioactive compounds.
120.000 Dutch men and women, age 55-69 gave complete dietary and lifestyle information in 1986. Scientists looked at their mortality rate 10 years later. People who eat a lot of nuts, had a lower premature mortality risk of respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer. Across all diseases, there was 23% lower risk during 10 years. Also, there was a decrease of: 30% for diabetes, 39% for respiratory disease and 45% for neurodegenerative disease.
The study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. The lead researcher was Prof Piet van den Brandt. He said that it is interesting that 15g of nuts, per day, can lower the mortality rate. In addition, people who eat nuts, eat more fruit and vegetables. Women were leaner and their results were adjustable. This is one of the simplest and very effective ways to protect your health and live longer. Further research is required in order to determine if there are more benefits.
